What is the Lakewood Auxiliary Police Unit?

The Lakewood Auxiliary Police Unit has a long and cherished history in the City of Lakewood.  The current unit evolved from the Civil Defense Unit, formed in 1942, in response to the United States entry into World War II.  The type of work performed today is quite different than it was in 1942, but the level of service to the community has not diminished.

The Lakewood Auxiliary Police Unit is a vital part of both the Police Department and the community, assisting with many important duties, such as traffic direction and crowd control at organized events.  They provide support at several events including: Summer Band Concerts, Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks, Lakewood Arts Festival, Lakewood Community Festival, and several annual road races.  Auxiliaries may find themselves conducting uniformed foot patrol in city parks during the summer.

Auxiliary officers also have the opportunity to ride on patrol with and assist Lakewood Police Officers during their shifts.  The Auxiliary Police increase the safety of community events and provide valuable support to the police department.

How to Join the Auxiliary Police Unit

Applicants for the Lakewood Auxiliary must be at least 18 years of age, be a high school graduate or GED equivalent, have a valid Ohio driver’s license, and be able to pass a background investigation.  Individuals who live outside of Lakewood are welcome to apply, but availability and ability to respond regularly and reliably should be considered by non-residents before applying.

Newly appointed Lakewood Police Auxiliary members will receive training in a wide variety of topics, skills and departmental policy.  This training is conducted by Lakewood Police officers.  The training is normally done in two to three hour blocks, usually in the afternoon or evening.

Each new officer will also have to complete ride-along training in the evening with senior auxiliary officers before being fully qualified to perform duties.

Upon completion of training, auxiliary officers are protected under Ohio Worker’s Compensation Insurance and are provided with uniforms and equipment.

Applications are available at the Lakewood Police Station, 12650 Detroit Avenue.  They can also be accessed by clicking here.  Completed online applications may be emailed to Lieutenant Deucher at William.Deucher@lakewoodoh.net, or printed out, filled in by hand, and dropped off at the police station front service counter. For more information, contact Lieutenant Deucher at (216) 529-6781.
