City Seeking Qualified Applicants for Position of Firefighter/Paramedic

The City of Lakewood is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. It is the applicant’s responsibility to promptly complete and return the application with all required attachments.  Only the first 150 complete, legible applications returned to the Civil Service Commission at Lakewood City Hall, 12650 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood, OH, will be accepted.

Applications will be accepted Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., from October 3, 2022, through Friday, October 28, 2022.  Applications WILL NOT be accepted Wednesday, October 12, 2022, through Friday, October 14, 2022.  The deadline for application submission is at or before 4:00 pm on October 28, 2022, or before 150 completed applications have been accepted, whichever is earlier.  A receipt will be issued for each submitted application and fee.

A properly completed application must include:

  • a legible application with all attachments;
  • a nonrefundable $30 fee — money order or cashier’s check made out to the City of Lakewood – NO personal checks or cash will be accepted;
  • a copy of a current State of Ohio paramedic certificate or proof of current enrollment in Ohio paramedic classes from school;
  • proof of high school graduation or GED certificate;
  • proof of eligibility for additional credits; and
  • a copy of valid Ohio driver’s license (six or more violation points may be disqualifying).

SALARY:  $57,182.36 plus benefits.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicant must be a high school graduate or possess a GED and must have a current State of Ohio paramedic certificate OR be currently enrolled in an Ohio paramedic program and possess adequate physical ability to perform all duties and utilize all issued equipment under hazardous conditions.  To be eligible for appointment, an applicant must meet all of the above qualifications and have successfully completed the entire application process (written exam, polygraph, and background investigation).  As a condition of appointment, candidate must provide a current, valid certificate of physical agility from Cuyahoga Community College certifying that the candidate has passed the exam in 4 minutes and 30 seconds or less. Following a conditional offer of employment, applicants shall be required to successfully complete a comprehensive psychological and medical examination, including drug screen.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  At the time of appointment, applicants must be U.S. citizens who are a minimum of 21 years of age and possess a valid Ohio paramedic certificate and a valid Ohio driver’s license with a good driving record (six or more violation points may be cause for disqualification). No person shall be eligible for original appointment on or after their 41st birthday. Appointees to the position of Firefighter are also subject to all applicable provisions of law, the charter and ordinances of the City of Lakewood, and all departmental rules and regulations.

EXAM INFORMATION:  Only those who have applied by the stated deadline and met the above qualifications will be admitted to the examination. Each applicant shall be assigned a computer-generated random number prior to the exam, which number shall be posted at the exam for review by applicants, to be used in the event that two or more applicants receive the same total score.

WRITTEN EXAM:  The written exam will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at the Lakewood High School Cafeteria, 14100 Franklin Boulevard, Lakewood, Ohio. Enter the cafeteria via the east doors located on Franklin Boulevard.  Parking will be available in the parking lot located on the north side of Franklin Boulevard. Check-in will begin at 5:30 p.m.; a valid ID is required for entry.  There will be no review of exam papers. Minimum passing score to be placed on the eligible list is 70%. The Commission reserves the right to change the time, date, and location of the test.

ADDITIONAL CREDITS:  For residency credit, applicants must file a completed “Release of Information from Municipal Income Tax Files” signed by the Municipal Tax Department. A DD214 must be filed for applicants to receive credit for active military service.
