Lakewood To Hold Fire Fighter/Paramedic Exam

The City of Lakewood is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Fire Fighter/Paramedic. It is the applicant’s responsibility to promptly complete and return the application with all the required attachments.  Only the first 75 properly completed and legible applications meeting the minimum requirements returned to the Civil Service Commission at the Women’s Club Pavilion located at 14532 Lake Avenue (Lakewood Park). Applications will be accepted during the following hours only Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. No applications will be accepted later than 4:00 pm on Monday, December 28, 2020 or earlier based on the date upon which all 75 applications are received. A receipt will be issued for each properly completed application with all attachments and the $25.00 fee.

A properly completed application will include:

  • Legible application with all attachments,
  • nonrefundable $25.00 fee (in the form of money order or cashier’s check made out to the City of Lakewood – NO personal checks or cash will be accepted),
  • copy of current State of Ohio Paramedic Certificate or proof of current enrollment in Ohio Paramedic classes (letter from the school only), and a copy of the Ohio Basic EMT Certificate
  • A copy of proof of High School Graduation or GED certificate
  • A copy of valid Ohio Driver’s License (six or more violation points may be disqualifying)

SALARY:  $55,516.85 current annual starting salary plus benefits.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicant must be a High School Graduate or possess a GED and possess a current State of Ohio Paramedic Certificate OR be currently enrolled in Ohio Paramedic Classes and possess adequate physical ability to perform all duties and utilize all issued equipment under hazardous conditions.  To be eligible for appointment an applicant must meet all above qualifications and have successfully completed all exams (written, physical ability, polygraph, and background investigations).  As a condition of appointment, candidate must provide a valid and current Certificate of Physical Agility from Cuyahoga Community College certifying that the candidate has passed the exam in 4 minutes and 30 seconds or less. Following job offer, applicants shall be required to successfully complete a comprehensive psychological and medical examination including drug screen. 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  At the time of appointment applicant must be a U.S. citizen at least 21 years of age and possess a current, valid Ohio Paramedic Certificate.  Must possess a valid Ohio Driver’s license with a good driving record, six or more violation points may be disqualifying. No person shall be eligible for original appointment on or after the person’s 41st birthday. Appointees to the position of Fire Fighter are also subject to all applicable provisions of law, the Charter and Ordinances of the City of Lakewood and all Departmental Rules and Regulations. 

EXAM INFORMATION:  Only those who have timely applied and meet the qualifications will be admitted to the examination. Each applicant will be assigned a computer generated random number prior to the exam, posted at the exam for review by applicants, to be used in the event that two or more applicants receive the same total score.  

WRITTEN EXAM:  4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at the Lakewood High School Cafeteria, 14100 Franklin Boulevard, Lakewood, Ohio. Enter through the front door that directly enters into the cafeteria off of Franklin Boulevard. Parking will be available in the parking lot across the street on Franklin Boulevard. Check in will begin at 3:30 p.m. and all applicants must show valid ID at check in.  There will be no inspection of exam papers. Minimum passing score to be placed on the eligible list is 70%. The Commission reserves the right to change the time, date and location of the test.  Masks and social distancing requirements will be maintained at all times. 

PHYSICAL ABILITY EXAM (AT APPLICANT’S EXPENSE): Cuyahoga Community College’s (CCC) physical ability test (PAT) completed in four minutes and 30 seconds or less. Certificate must be valid and current at the time of appointment. If you do not possess a certificate verifying this, contact CCC at 216-987-5429 or 216-987-5060 for scheduling. Next session is January 10, 2021 deadline to sign up is January 6, 2021 at 4:00 p.m.

Additional credit:  For Residency credit applicants must file a completed “Release of Information from Municipal Income Tax Files” signed by the Municipal Tax Department. A DD214 must be filed for applicants to receive credit for Active Military Service.
