The City of Lakewood to Host Child Safety Seat Event – Thursday, July 14th

June 23, 2022

Monthly infant and child car seat installation events with Fire Department planned

The City of Lakewood Fire Department will host a Car Seat Fit Stop event on Thursday, July 14th  from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Fire Station #1, 14601 Madison Avenue. This free event is open to Lakewood families who are interested in having their car seats installed or checked for proper set up.

“Parents want to protect their children, and while most use child safety seats in cars, studies performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have shown that, unfortunately, more than half of these seats are installed improperly,” said Mayor Meghan F. George. “This low-cost, high-benefit program provided by our trained fire department personnel hopes to address this issue. Lakewood is home to thousands of families with children and providing this program to them free of charge helps improve the safety of our children.”

The program is a collaboration with University Hospital Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital as part of the Safe Kids Greater Cleveland program. “Seven of our members at the Lakewood Fire Department have undergone specific training to properly install child safety seats,” explained Lakewood Fire Chief Tim Dunphy. “The program requires 34 hours of up front training to be certified, and an additional six hours of continuing education every two years to stay up to date. Our team at the Lakewood Fire Department is excited to provide this service to the community.”

The Fire Department plans on offering the program monthly on the second Thursday of the month from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and occasional Sundays.
