City of Lakewood is seeking one (1) qualified candidate for the position of Animal Control Officer in the Division of Police. Qualified candidates must have correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary. Must have knowledge of applicable state, federal and local ordinances, laws, rules and regulations. Must have experience with record keeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques. Qualified candidates must be comfortable handling domestic and wild animals. Must be able to use tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines. Candidate must be able to communicate orally with internal staff, citizens, and other departmental staff in order to give and receive information in a courteous manner. Ability to recognize the symptoms of rabies in animals. Ability to recognize signs of illness in animals. Ability to prepare and process fiscal and administrative records and reports. Ability to handle and work with animals safely, in a humane manner and in hazardous and non-hazardous situations. must have the ability to communicate clearly over the telephone and radio.

Work is performed in an animal shelter and in the field, exposing the incumbent to outside atmospheric conditions and non-weather related hot temperatures and humid conditions; conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases and poor ventilation that affect the respiratory system, eyes or the skin; and possible bodily injury from toxic or caustic chemicals from dangerous and/or diseased animals or from falling from high, exposed places.  When handling animals, incumbent is exposed to parasites, diseases and poison transferred by animal bites. The incumbent’s working conditions are typically very loud.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess high school diploma or GED
  • Valid State of Ohio Driver’s License with less than eight (8)
  • One year of progressively responsible related experience or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job
  • Ability to work independently.

  • State Certification in Euthanasia within 60 days of employment (or as soon as testing for certification is available)

GENERAL INFORMATION:

This is a union position, and the employee may be required to work overtime pursuant to the provisions of Article 5 and Article 15 of the current negotiated agreement. Applicants may be reassigned as required.

Wage Rate: $22.55 – $25.02

Normal Work Hours: Su and M 8am – 4:30pm and T, W, Th 12:30pm – 9pm
