CITY OF LAKEWOOD – PUBLIC WORKS FLEET
ENTRY LEVEL MECHANIC

The City of Lakewood is currently seeking one (1) Entry Level Mechanics in its Fleet Division. This is a full time AFSCME Bargaining Unit position with an hourly rate of $26.66 – $27.05. Normal working hours are 6:30 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. (M-F); shift hours will vary by season and need per the negotiated contract.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must have the ability to lift and/or pull 50 to 150 lbs. with or without mechanical or other assistance frequently throughout the work day; must have the ability to climb in and out of vehicles or equipment, and work from ladders and platforms; must be able to perform physical demands (i.e., bending, reaching, climbing, squatting, standing and extensive use of hands, arms, fingers, and legs); must be able to work in all weather conditions; must be able to work around chemicals, dust, heat, fumes and pungent odors, using prescribed safety equipment and procedures.  Must have a mechanical aptitude and gain a working knowledge to perform all maintenance aspects of vehicles, equipment, machinery and specialty items of motor vehicle fleet to the Department’s established standards; must be able to properly evaluate damage and/or failures to determine necessary repair or replacement of parts on automotive, trucks and various equipment of all Departments of the City of Lakewood, including but not limited to salt trucks, dump trucks, plows, front-end loaders, back-hoes, sweepers, Vac-All and refuse vehicles; must be able to use all other mechanical equipment; must possess a working knowledge of hydraulics and small engines, air brakes, pneumatics, 12-volt and 24-volt electrical systems for diesel and gas powered engines; must be able to read and understand electrical schematics and diagnostics trees; must be competent in the use of testing equipment, OTC diagnostics and software; must gain working knowledge of all automatic transmissions and repair of manual transmissions; must display expertise, capacity and extensive field experience to make repairs on all types of City vehicles and equipment on and off site; may be required to do repairs on the road; Must be able to order necessary parts and/or supplies to complete repairs; must have the aptitude to diagnose and correct problems; must gain preventative maintenance experience and ability to maintain a regular PM service maintenance for all equipment; must be able to work as a team employee among the work group; must have the ability to maintain records, open work orders and use lap top and desk station computers; Must be able to use software programs to perform diagnostics and repairs; must have the knowledge of safe work practice and gain the knowledge of best service repair practices in Fleet industry; must be able to prioritize and complete vehicle repairs in a controlled cost environment and work within established standards; must be able to follow repairs from any working shift or mechanic when needed;  must have the ability to communicate clearly via telephone, radio and email.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Able to work independently.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A valid Ohio Driver’s License with less than eight (8) points.
  • Class A Commercial Driver License preferred or must be able to obtain at the next CDL training offered by the City.
  • Must possess tanker and passenger endorsements or must be able to obtain at the next CDL training offered by the City.
  • Must obtain a certification for Heating and Air Conditioning recirculation, recycling and recovery as required by Section 609 of the amended Clean Air Act and filed with the EPA within two (2) years.
  • Must obtain a minimum of four (4) ASE certifications within two (2) years of hire* (Master level preferred) and maintain same throughout employment.
  • Diesel experience preferred.
  • Must have mechanic aptitude and previous experience maintaining and repairing motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Must be able to problem solve and proficient in computer use.
  • Must satisfactorily complete a physical examination, drug screen and police background investigation.
  • Will be able to successfully interview for the position, which may include technical and/or hands on demonstration questions.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Employee may be required to work overtime pursuant to the provisions of Article 5 and Article 15 of the current negotiated agreement. Applicants may be reassigned as required. Overtime call-ins for breakdowns or road service may be assigned to another mechanic when needed. This will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
