City of Lakewood Update on Winterhurst Operations

April 03, 2023

The City of Lakewood has determined that it will exit the existing lease agreement for the Winterhurst facility. The City had previously entered into an agreement with a private operator in 2008, last amended in 2018, under specific operating and maintenance terms.

Since 1931, Winterhurst has been a beloved community asset and key recreation facility for the people of Lakewood. The City’s overarching goal for the facility is that Winterhurst acts as an affordable, inviting, community-focused ice rink that first and foremost serves the needs and priorities of the people of Lakewood.

After careful consideration of the existing conditions and operations of Winterhurst to determine if the current model is meeting community goals, the City believes that it is in the best interests of the people of Lakewood, the City, and the users of Winterhurst to exit the current agreement and explore an updated model for operation of the facility.

The City has issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to begin the process to identify and select a qualified operator that aligns with the City’s overarching goals for the Winterhurst facility. An updated set of operating parameters for the Winterhurst facility will be part of the selection process. The City also will be engaging Lakewood residents, the local hockey and skating communities, and other key users of the facility to ensure that the City’s vision and the updated operating model aligns well with those of the community.

As this process moves forward, the City will continue to provide updates and information on the status of the future vision for Winterhurst.
